Stables Tavern: Manchester's Historic Pub Reborn
A Pub Worth Fighting For
The Stables Tavern has stood on the edge of Manchester's Northern Quarter for over a century. It's the kind of pub that doesn't need a gimmick — good cask ale, honest food, and a crowd that ranges from office workers to old regulars who remember when the area was still rough around the edges.
When plans emerged for a high-rise development that would have required its demolition, the community response was swift and decisive.
The Campaign
CAMRA Central Manchester, alongside local residents and heritage groups, rallied to have the pub listed as an Asset of Community Value — a legal protection that gives communities the right to bid if the building is put up for sale.
The campaign highlighted not just the pub's social value, but its architectural significance: original tiling, etched glass, and a layout that tells the story of how pubs were designed to serve distinct communities within a single building.
What It Means for Pub Protection
The Stables Tavern case is a textbook example of how ACV listings, community mobilisation, and planning objections can work together to protect venues that matter.
Looking Forward
The fight for the Stables Tavern is far from over, but the fact that it's still standing — and still pouring — is a testament to what happens when a community decides a pub is worth saving.
